5 Best-Selling MPVs in Indonesia in 2021: Toyota Dominates the Market

The Indonesian automotive market showed signs of recovery in 2021 after facing significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Several factors helped stimulate vehicle demand, including government tax incentives and the launch of refreshed and all-new models.

Among the various vehicle segments, the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) remained one of the most popular choices for Indonesian families. Practical interiors, flexible seating configurations, relatively affordable ownership costs, and the ability to carry multiple passengers have helped MPVs maintain their strong position in the market.

Based on sales recorded from January through November 2021, five MPV models stood out as the best-selling vehicles in Indonesia. Toyota dominated the ranking, placing three models among the top five.

Here is a closer look at the five best-selling MPVs in Indonesia during 2021.

5 Best-Selling MPVs in Indonesia in 2021: Toyota Dominates the Market

1. Toyota Avanza and Veloz – 56,127 Units

The Toyota Avanza and Veloz combination took the top spot with total sales of 56,127 units between January and November 2021.

The figure includes the previous models as well as the all-new Toyota Avanza and Toyota Veloz, which arrived toward the end of 2021. The new-generation models represented a major update for Toyota's popular MPV lineup, offering a more modern design and improved features.

Interestingly, the sales composition also shifted between the two models. In the previous generation, the Avanza accounted for the larger share of sales. With the new generation, however, the Veloz became the more dominant model, representing approximately 67.4 percent of the combined sales figure.

The All-New Toyota Avanza was particularly attractive to buyers looking for a practical and functional family vehicle. The 1.5 G manual and CVT variants were among the choices favored by customers who prioritized everyday usability, whether for city driving or occasional out-of-town trips.

Meanwhile, the Toyota Veloz targeted customers looking for a more stylish and feature-rich MPV. Higher-end variants such as the 1.5 Q CVT and 1.5 Q CVT TSS appealed to buyers who wanted a more premium appearance and additional technology.

The strong sales performance of the Avanza and Veloz demonstrates Toyota's continued dominance in Indonesia's family-car market.

2. Mitsubishi Xpander and Xpander Cross – 45,576 Units

The Mitsubishi Xpander, including the Xpander Cross, ranked second with 45,576 units sold from January through November 2021.

The result represented a significant improvement compared with the previous year, when Xpander sales reached approximately 26,362 units.

Mitsubishi strengthened the Xpander lineup with updated styling and several improvements designed to make the vehicle more competitive in the crowded MPV segment.

The updated Xpander received a redesigned front end featuring a new grille and bumper, while the headlights adopted Mitsubishi's distinctive T-shaped LED design. The rear section was also updated with a new tailgate garnish.

One of the major changes was the adoption of a CVT transmission in the refreshed Xpander. Mitsubishi also improved the suspension system to enhance ride comfort and driving characteristics.

The model was also equipped with a range of safety and convenience features, depending on the variant. These included an Electronic Parking Brake, Brake Auto Hold, Cruise Control, Hill Start Assist, Active Stability Control, Speed Sensing Door Lock, Auto Stop and Go, and Emergency Stop Signal.

The Xpander Cross offered a more rugged interpretation of the same family-oriented concept. While its exterior updates were relatively subtle, the interior received several changes aimed at improving comfort and perceived quality.

The strong sales performance of the Xpander shows that Mitsubishi successfully established itself as one of Toyota's strongest competitors in Indonesia's MPV market.

3. Toyota Kijang Innova and Venturer – 43,408 Units

Another Toyota model secured third place in the ranking. The Toyota Kijang Innova and Venturer recorded 43,408 units in sales through November 2021.

The Kijang Innova has long been recognized as one of Indonesia's most established family MPVs. Compared with smaller MPVs, it offers a larger cabin, stronger engine options, and a more premium driving experience.

The 2021 model was available with both gasoline and diesel powertrains. The diesel version used Toyota's 2.4-liter 2GD-FTV engine with DOHC technology and a variable nozzle turbocharger with intercooler technology.

The gasoline variant was powered by a 2.0-liter 1TR-FE engine featuring Dual VVT-i technology.

The combination of a spacious cabin, three-row seating, and a reputation for durability helped the Innova remain popular among Indonesian families.

The model also benefited from tax incentives available during the period, which helped improve its competitiveness in the market.

Toyota also introduced a limited-edition version of the Innova in 2021 to commemorate the company's 50th anniversary in Indonesia. Only a limited number of units were offered, featuring special exterior styling details.

4. Daihatsu Sigra – 36,717 Units

The Daihatsu Sigra ranked fourth among Indonesia's best-selling MPVs in 2021, with 36,717 units sold through November.

As part of Indonesia's Low Cost Green Car, or LCGC, segment, the Sigra appealed to buyers who wanted an affordable seven-seat vehicle with relatively low operating costs.

One of the model's biggest advantages was its combination of affordability, practical interior space, fuel efficiency, and relatively inexpensive maintenance.

Despite its budget-oriented positioning, the Sigra featured a modern exterior design. Selected variants came with 14-inch alloy wheels and additional exterior details that gave the vehicle a more upscale appearance.

Inside, the cabin featured a two-tone color scheme and a more modern dashboard layout. Depending on the variant, buyers could also get features such as a touchscreen head unit and electrically folding side mirrors.

Safety equipment included dual SRS airbags, ABS with EBD on selected variants, and three-point front seat belts with pretensioners and force limiters.

The Sigra was offered with two engine options. The smaller 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine produced around 67 horsepower and 89 Nm of torque, while the 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine generated approximately 88 horsepower and 108 Nm of torque.

Its combination of affordability and practicality made the Daihatsu Sigra a popular choice among budget-conscious Indonesian families.

5. Toyota Calya – 32,258 Units

Completing the top five was another Toyota model, the Toyota Calya, which recorded 32,258 units in sales through November 2021.

The Calya is a compact seven-seat MPV positioned within the LCGC category. Its affordable price and practical configuration made it particularly attractive to first-time car buyers and families looking for an economical vehicle.

The Toyota Calya was powered by a 1.2-liter four-cylinder 3NR Dual VVT-i engine producing approximately 88 horsepower.

Customers could choose between a five-speed manual transmission and a four-speed automatic transmission.

The compact MPV offered seating for up to seven occupants, making it a practical choice for families who wanted the versatility of a three-row vehicle without moving into a larger and more expensive MPV segment.

The Calya's combination of affordability, practicality, and relatively efficient operation helped it secure a place among Indonesia's five best-selling MPVs in 2021.

Toyota's Strong Presence in Indonesia's MPV Market

The 2021 sales ranking highlights Toyota's strong position in Indonesia's MPV market. Three Toyota models appeared in the top five: the Avanza and Veloz, Kijang Innova and Venturer, and Toyota Calya.

Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Xpander demonstrated that Toyota faced serious competition, particularly in the mainstream family MPV segment.

The popularity of these vehicles also reflects the preferences of Indonesian consumers. MPVs remain attractive because they combine passenger capacity, practicality, and versatility in a single package.

For many families, an MPV can serve multiple purposes, from daily commuting and school runs to long-distance road trips and family vacations.
